Problem Solving
A lot of artists don’t like commissioned work - a client asking them to make a painting with constraints, parameters, boundaries.
I LOVE commissions!
I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of making a painting for a particular setting. The painting has to be a certain size and shape. It needs to relate to the other colors in the room and reflect the intended feeling or mood of the space. See? Decisions are already made! We’re halfway there. My clients love feeling that they’re part of the creative process, too, watching the work develop.
Artists do need to retain artistic license in this process. I clearly communicate this with clients. The art I create must be reflective of my current body of work.
Last year, I renovated the 50 year old master bath in my home, and commissioned myself to do a painting for the new room instead of trying to find a piece of art to fit. I knew it had to be a tall vertical painting to fit the space…48” tall by 24” wide would be perfect. I wanted it to be contemporary in feeling, and reflect the patterns in the tile and towels I’d picked.
I loved playing with these patterns and limited palette.
Is there a place in your home that needs a piece of art but you just can’t find the right painting?
